Fukuurajima Island is a highlight of Matsushima hidden in plain sight. While the sightseeing boats offer great island views from the sea, and scenic overlooks offer great views from land, a visit to Matsushima isn’t complete without setting foot on an island yourself.
Cross the 252-meter-long Fukuurabashi Bridge to explore this garden island. Well-maintained walking trails crisscross the island and pass by more than three hundred species of plants. There is little danger of getting lost, as a full loop of the island can be completed in just thirty minutes. Near the center of the island is a small temple devoted to Benzaiten, the goddess of fortune, with unusual decorations placed around it by worshippers.
From late winter to midsummer, Fukuurajima Island is enlivened by the many types of flowers in bloom including camellia, cherry blossoms, and tulips. Around the island are scenic overlooks with benches where one can take a rest. Bring a snack to enjoy in the grassy, table-equipped picnic area.
Fukkurajima is a place I love to visit in the late afternoon. You can sit and watch the boats go by, and sometimes get treated to a spectacular sunset over the town. Even when Matsushima gets crowded, this island feels like an oasis of calm.
