Head to the All-Japan Kokeshi Festival for a chance to see, create, and purchase kokeshi dolls! Kokeshi dolls are a traditional craft said to have originated in the Tohoku region during the late Edo period. They are categorized into eleven styles: Tsugaru, Nanbu, Kijiyama, Zaotakayu, Yamagata, Hijiori, Naruko, Sakunami, Togatta, Yajiro, and Tsuchiyu. All eleven styles are represented at this event.
The festival kicks off on Friday with religious rites performed to express gratitude to old kokeshi and wish for the continued success of kokeshi craftsmen. The main events start on Saturday, providing visitors the opportunity to purchase and create their own kokeshi, watch professional craftsmen demonstrate their skill, and view exhibitions of unique kokeshi. A parade consisting of traditional dancing and people dressed up as kokeshi takes place Saturday night. -
