The Tohoku Kizuna Festival is an event where six famous festivals from across Tohoku, one from each prefecture, are celebrated all at once. The festival takes place in a different Tohoku prefecture each year. The main event is a parade featuring the most recognizable elements from each of these traditional Tohoku summer festivals: the Waraji Festival from Fukushima, the Sendai Tanabata from Miyagi, the Hanagasa Festival from Yamagata, the Sansa Dance from Iwate, the Kanto Festival from Akita, and the Nebuta Festival from Aomori.
"Kizuna" is Japanese for "bond." With the 2019 festival being held in Fukushima Prefecture, the mission is for visitors to transcend differences in region and culture and be inspired to take further steps towards aiding earthquake and tsunami recovery efforts. -
