The Tohoku Food Marathon in Tome City is growing in popularity. It currently sees hundreds of participants every year, including many from overseas. Several races are hosted, including the only full marathon in the prefecture. Servings of local delicacies are available to racers at checkpoints throughout the course.
Runners and spectators alike can enjoy tasting regional delicacies and around one hundred varieties of sake, as several food-related events are held in conjunction with the race: the Tome Food Festival, Tohoku Sake Festival, Tohoku Food Night, etc.
Inspired by France's Marathon du Medoc, the event also encourages runners to wear themed costumes. It's not uncommon to see participants dressed as popular characters like Mario or Sailor Moon. Families can also participate in a parent-child event and relay event.
