The National Kokeshi Doll Competition takes place every year in Shiroishi City, where kokeshi doll artisans from across Japan submit their work in a variety of categories. These categories range from traditional to modern and innovative styles of kokeshi. A total of 800 works will be on display or for purchase.

The event also features live kokeshi-making demonstrations by top-level artisans as well as opportunities to paint your own kokeshi for ¥500. A kokeshi painting contest open to the public will be held on the last day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., where applicants get to be instructed by the artisans themselves before painting their kokeshi.
