Ryokan Bentenkaku is located in Naruko Onsen village. It is managed by Mr. Takenobu Kikuchi, who can speak both English and Chinese in addition to Japanese. Kikuchi believes that although we have differences in our ways of thinking and how we perceive the world around us, it is the unparalleled respect for humanity that has the potential to bring us together. His travels and work presented him with the opportunity to interact closely with several Muslim people. When he learned about their dietary restrictions, he was inspired to make his ryokan more welcoming for Muslim travelers.
Ryokan Bentenkaku offers an authentic hot spring experience with traditional Japanese meals, and also has provisions for halal meals which cater to Muslim guests. Great attention is paid to detail to ensure that the standards of halal food are strictly observed, from the kinds of spices and oil used to the preparation of the meat. I liked the well-balanced flavors and was impressed by the diverse styles of cuisine prepared here.
In addition to halal meals, the ryokan offers private onsen baths, suitable for Muslims or any guests who don’t wish to bathe nude in front of others.
Even though the concept of halal stems from Islam, it does not imply that it is only for the consumption of Muslims; everyone can enjoy halal food! Therefore, I recommend the halal meals and a stay at Bentenkaku to everyone, regardless of religious orientation.
