  • Kuraken Cafe is one of the many revitalization projects in Shichikashuku being brought about by Yoichi Fujita. Located in a renovated one-hundred-year-old traditional Japanese house, this cafe is designed as a coffee or lunch stop with travelers in mind.

Charming as the property is, it is also often where the town meets with potential new residents, to introduce the charms of Shichikashuku in an effort to help reduce the town’s population decline. In fact, this is how the cafe got its name—“Kuraken” is an abbreviation of Kurashi Kenkyujo (lit. “Living Research Institute”). With a traditional Japanese aesthetic grounded in the building itself, Kuraken is a cozy, charming little spot where you can enjoy a cup of coffee and lunch or sweets beside the warmth of a traditional irori hearth, all while taking in the nature of the surrounding mountainous countryside.
