Summer in northern Japan is brief, so make the most of it with a trip to the beach. Tsukihama, located at the tip of Miyato Island, lies in a protected cove. The cove calms the waves, making it well-suited for families with children. A designated swimming season runs from mid-July to mid-August, the time of year when the beach is patrolled by a lifeguard. Next to the beach there are showers, toilets, and changing facilities. The beach is relatively spacious and has soft sand, making it a pleasant place to go for a walk in cooler seasons. The name Tsukihama (lit. “Moon Beach”) is a tribute to the ethereal view of the moon reflected in the calm waters of the cove.
The Oku-Matsushima Experience Network is located nearby. It offers fishing trips, sea kayak rental, and more (reservations required).
