• Shiogama Shrine is one of the most revered shrines in Miyagi, said to have been established some 1200 years ago. Fifteen of its buildings are designated Important Cultural Properties and the dozens of Shiogama zakura trees that dot the grounds are designated Natural Monuments.

Every year two illumination events are held at Shiogama Shrine, one in the spring and once in autumn. The spring illumination is held during peak sakura (cherry blossom) season and serves as a gorgeous counterpart to the autumn one which is held during peak autumn foliage season. While hanami (flower viewing) is usually conducted during the day, at this event you can experience the fleeting beauty of sakura in full bloom beautifully illuminated at night in a place steeped in history.

During the event, traditional Shinto theatrical music performances will also be held at the main shrine.
